The East Texas town of Tyler, Texas, is one of the largest cities in that part of the state - east of Dallas, north of Houston, convenient to the Louisiana border.
Have you ever heard of the Tyler Rose? If you're a rose aficionado you have. And if you visit Tyler, you will. Flowers, and roses in particular, play a huge part in this city's life.
The Texas Rose Festival is held every October and is a major draw for rose enthusiasts and for festival-goers of every stripe. The Azalea Trail runs for several weeks in the spring, usually overlapping parts of March and April.
Tyler's Municipal Rose Garden and Museum is a centerpiece of city life, a 22-acre garden that is the largest municipal rose garden in the U.S. There are nearly 40,000 rose bushes covering around 500 varieties. May through November is the best time to catch the garden in bloom.
Elsewhere around town, the Caldwell Zoo is one of the best smaller-city zoos in Texas. The Tyler State Park is 10 miles north of town and is a great area for camping, fishing and swimming, or just hanging out amidst the pine trees.
For museums, try the Smith County Historical Museum or Tyler Museum of Art. Astronomy enthusiasts should pay a visit to the Hudnall Planetarium on the campus of Tyler Junior College.

Tyler is in East Texas, about halfway between Dallas and Shreveport, La. Interstate 20 sits north of Tyler and is the main east-west highway, accessible by several roads heading northeast and northwest out of Tyler. U.S. Highway 271 is the main north-south access route for drivers.
Tyler Pounds Regional Airport is operated by the city of Tyler and serves the greater area, including nearby Longview. The airport is served by American Eagle (connecting through Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport) and Continental Connection (connecting through George Bush International Airport in Houston).
