San Angelo
San Angelo marks the end of the Hill Country's geographic spread to the west, and marks the beginning of the vast expanse of the state that falls under the geographic categorization of "West Texas."

Here, the hills flatten out and start to be replaced with washes, draws and canyons. The brown dirt of the Hill Country turns into mineral-rich red clay dirt. And mineral-rich the area is, with oil and gas wells dotting the countryside.

San Angelo offers great hunting, and fishing is good within San Angelo State Park. The Concho River meanders through town and the Concho River Valley provides good birding (Paint Rock, the site of Indian pictographs, is just downriver from San Angelo).

Fort Concho, the military outpost that gave birth to the city, is a popular tourist stop. San Angelo is home to Angelo State University and Goodfellow Air Force Base. The city offers several interesting museums and boasts a couple minor-league sports teams.

The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo, held every February, is a major draw.
