About the Monastery of St. Clare Miniature Horse Farm:
The Monastery of St. Clare Miniature Horse Farm, also known as Monastery Miniature Horses, has been raising miniature horses since 1981.
The monastery is the home to Franciscan Poor Clare Nuns (a k a, the Poor Clares), a non-profit religious organization "devoted to the contemplative life of prayer, penance, union with God." Raising miniature horses is one of the ways the nuns of the monastery support themselves, which also include an Art Barn offering arts and crafts, and supplying churches with communion wafers.
But it's the chance to interact and pet miniature horses that draws most visitors to the Monastery of St. Clare Miniature Horse Farm. A miniature horse is defined as one that reaches a maximum height of 34 inches at the shoulder blades.
The grounds of the monastery are open to visitors Tuesday-Saturday, 1:30-4 p.m. In January, February and September, days are Friday and Saturday only. Please do not visit at any other times, as the nuns may be involved in prayer, other religious activities, or other work efforts.
Visitors may choose a self-guided tour or a guided tour. Self-guided tours take the visitor to view the horses, Art Barn, and Monastery Chapel. A small admission fee is charged. Guided tours are available Monday-Friday by reservation only, for groups of 15 or more adults, or a minimum fee of $75. The tour lasts approximately one hour.
The grounds are closed the week preceding Easter and Christmas. Call ahead around other major holidays to check the schedule.
